A-Z Challenge | Directors Series | R -Ritwik Ghatak
Ritwik Ghatak is one of the best ever filmmakers from India. Unfortunately, he never got the fame and recognition he deserved during his lifetime. Ritwik Ghatak is regarded as the TRUE ARTIST by Satyajit Ray. His movies never compromised on the quality, he had no commercial compromises in his movies. His movies talked about the society and the struggle in most realistic and relatable way. He along with his contemporaries Satyajit Ray and Mrinal Sen formed the pioneers of Parallel Cinema. We needed a foreign restoration project to recognize him, we needed a Scorcese to be proud of him.
The movie to be spotlighted is Meghe Dhaka Tara(The cloud-capped star). Meghe Dhaka Tara(1960) tells us the story of Neeta, a young teenage girl from a refugee family lives along with her family. Her goodness is taken for granted and she suffers a lot. This movie captures her suffering in a hard-hitting way. This movie shows how the partition affected the lives of the people. Meghe Dhaka Tara along with Komal Gandhar(1961) and Subarnareakha(1962) forms the trilogy that deals with the effect of partition.
Other must watch works of Ritwik Ghatak are Komal Gandhar, Subarnarekha, Ajantrik, and Nagarik. These are my top pics having said that it’s impossible for me to leave out any movies of Ritwik Ghatak.
